You’d think sound would be enough for watching the news.

Turn on the stream, hear the anchor speak, and everything should make sense. Except most people aren’t actually listening. They’re watching on mute. On a phone. In a meeting. On a commute. In places where turning the volume on is awkward, annoying, or simply not worth it.

So they rely on captions.

Except now the captions are late. Or missing. Or halfway through the sentence when the anchor has already moved on. And suddenly the experience feels a bit like that moment: You know something important is happening, but you can’t quite tell what.

Captions are different.

When captions lag, drop, or fall out of sync, the viewer doesn’t just notice a mistake. They lose the thread entirely. The words on screen stop matching the story being told. For anyone relying on captions to follow along, comprehension collapses immediately.

Why traditional captioning workflows break under live pressure

Most captioning workflows assume a pace that live news simply doesn’t allow.

They assume speakers will finish sentences. They assume context will stay stable long enough to be captured. They assume there’s time to recover when something goes wrong. Live news violates all of that by design.

Breaking updates interrupt planned narratives. Reporters talk over each other. Names and locations change mid-segment. A sentence that started one way may never end the same way. Captions don’t get to smooth that out. They have to keep up in real time or they stop being useful.

Enable live captions on an RTMP livestream

FastPix can generate closed captions natively for your live streams, without extra tools or third-party caption services. This works only for RTMP-based livestreams right now, because RTMP pushes captions into the HLS manifest used for playback. If you ingest via SRT, this caption workflow isn’t supported yet.

Step 1: Create a livestream with captions enabled

You must enable captions when you create the livestream. If you skip the captions parameter, FastPix will not generate a caption track, and you cannot add captions later once the stream has started.

Step 2: Broadcast to the RTMP ingest URL

After stream creation, FastPix returns an RTMP ingest URL + stream key. Use your encoder (OBS Studio, Wirecast, vMix, ffmpeg, etc.) to publish to that RTMP endpoint.

Captions will automatically propagate into the HLS playback stream. Expect a 20–30 second warm-up delay before captions start showing up in the player. That delay is normal.

Step 3: Verify captions in playback

Open the stream preview in the FastPix Dashboard. If captions are enabled, you’ll see a CC control in the player UI. You can also copy the HLS playback URL and test in common players like Safari (native HLS), hls.js, JW Player, Video.js, or Shaka Player.

Practical constraints to know upfront

Captions are RTMP-only for now, captions appear with a small delay, and once you enable captions for a livestream, you can’t disable them mid-stream. If you need a stream without captions, you’ll create a new livestream without closedCaptions: true.
