Challenge

Oceaniek team’s initial focus with their OTT platform was on helping users discover what to watch and where to watch it i.e. recommending the right content based on time, mood, and language preferences.

But in early 2025, Oceaniek stepped into a new role: not just curating content, but becoming the official broadcaster of a national sports event. The event was the People’s Unity Cup 2025 - a 10 over cricket tournament that brought together athletes from India’s trans community for a day of high-energy, high-visibility sport.

“We’ve always focused on helping users  find something great to watch,” says Sandeep Kumar, Head of Business Operations at Oceaniek Stream. “But the People's Unity Cup was different. We weren’t linking out. We were hosting. And we had to make sure it worked across every device - phones, tablets, smart TVs - for hours at a stretch.”

Increasingly live sports are becominga rich monetization and retention opportunity for OTT platforms. Live sports used to be and are a lucrative revenuestream for television networks, guaranteeing large audiences and in-built revenue. With audience increasingly shifting from TVs to OTT, these revenue opportunitiesare also now shifting and leverageable by forward thinking OTTs like Netflix, Prime and Oceaniek.

Oceaniek knew from the beginning that this wasn’t a stream they could risk breaking. Viewers expected a smooth, uninterrupted experience. The operations team expected full visibility into what was happening. And the product team didn’t want to manage OBS rigs or patch together fallback logic on the day of the event. And importantly they wanted it up and running fast – in a couple of weeks.

After an intense shopping period reviewing internal options and third-party platforms, they chose FastPix.
“We didn’t want to build our own live video infra,”says Aditya Rana, Platform Engineer at Oceaniek.“We wanted a solution where we could stream via OBS, embed it into our app, monitor playback in real time, and be confident it would hold up. With FastPix we were able to rest the streams immediately upon sign up. The Support team was also available for any questions”

Solution and Result

Solution and Result
Live sports streaming, handled end-to-end, in 1 day
With FastPix, Oceaniek was able to set up the full live stream - from ingest to playback - without managing servers, encoders, or any custom backend in 24 hours! .
All shepherded by Oceaniek’s super developer Aditya Rana with advise from his friends at FastPix
Here’s how it worked:
  • The production team used OBS to stream the event via RTMP directly to
    FastPix.

  • FastPix handled just-in-time encoding, converting the raw stream intoHLS in real time.
  • FastPix’s adaptive bitrate streaming ensured that viewers on both high-speedand patchy networks could watch without interruption.
  • On the frontend, Oceaniek used the FastPix SDKs to embed the stream insidetheir Android, iOS, and smart TV apps.
  • Playback was served through FastPix’s multi-CDN architecture.
  • Meanwhile, the operations team used FastPix Video Data to track real-time playback metrics like buffering ratio, resolution shifts, and viewer engagement- across devices.
“The stream ran for eight hours without a single crash or buffer spike,” says Aditya. “We saw some viewers switch networks, others drop to low resolution - but the stream never broke. That’s the kind of resilience we couldn’t have built ourselves in a few weeks.”.
Oceaniek didn’t need to manage infrastructure or worry about scaling for spikes. FastPix took care of that, so their team could focus on building the experience.
And because FastPix automatically captured the stream as it was being delivered, Oceaniek had a full live-to-VOD recording of the event available as soon as it ended - ready to be clipped, replayed, or archived.
“It felt like FastPix was part of our engineering team during the whole thing,” says Aditya. “They were there on every test run, helping us configure settings for TV playback, monitoring ingest latency - we weren’t just handed docs and told to figure it out.”
